The decision taken by the Government to transport cargo using the railway system is timely and important. It is a milestone in the transport and logistic industry and would provide impetus for industrial growth, National Chamber of Commerce Sri Lanka Shipping, Ports and Aviation Committee Chairman Sujeiva Samaraweera told Daily News Business.
Using latest technology to upgrade facilities and to make it user and operational friendly could develop the rail transportation infrastructure further. This will have a positive impact on the economy and development of the regional transportation, he said."The rail transport will not only boost the internal trade, but would be advantage for the export sector with the availability of easy access to the transportation facility. The traffic congestion at the road transportation could be minimized thereby increasing the level of efficiency," he said.
The country needs to promote the dry port concept where rail transport is connected to the road transport with efficient and an effective system to enhance usability.
A developed rail network will also facilitate an improved logistic performance level, he said.
